Since joining the Independence Institute in 2003, senior policy analyst Ben DeGrow has advanced its research in the areas of collective bargaining, teacher unionism, teacher employment, and school finance. In addition to writing more than two dozen Institute reports, his opinion-editorials and articles have been published in numerous Colorado periodicals. He is a contributing editor and writer for the national monthly School Reform News, and a regular blogger for Education News Colorado and Public Sector, Inc. Ben has served as a member of the American Legislative Exchange Council’s Education Task Force—successfully proposing major changes to the model Open Enrollment Act—and of the Douglas County School District School Choice Task Force. He chairs the board of Douglas County’s Choice Scholarship School, which oversees the nation’s first local school board-created private educational choice program.
Ben is a summa cum laude graduate of Hillsdale College and a recipient of a master’s degree in history from Penn State University, with experience in classroom teaching and print journalism. He is married to Marya DeGrow, an Education Policy Center colleague. They are parents of three girls—the oldest a kindergarten student in a Jefferson County charter school.
