Rep. (District 73) in the Oklahoma House of Representatives
Schedule a Speaking Engagement With Jabar Shumate
Jabar Shumate represents the people of Oklahoma’s House District 73 located in the northwest section of Tulsa. Representative Shumate believes that the civil rights issue of the 21st century is how we ensure quality education for all kids. He believes that educators and policy makers should welcome debate on educational reform. Serving both on education policy and budget committees for the Oklahoma state house; Shumate has authored and passed into law some of the most significant educational reforms in Oklahoma State history. In 2007 Shumate passed legislation that allows higher education institutions to authorize public charters; and in 2008 he helped draft the first authorizing contract between the state’s only historically black university and the state’s first public charter. In 2008, Shumate worked with a bi-partisan group to draft and pass out of the state senate “The New Hope Scholarship Program,” the first tax credit scholarship legislation ever to pass the Oklahoma Senate.
