Having had a grandmother passionate about these issues, serving as president of her local school board as well as time spent teaching in the classroom, there has long been an emphasis that letting the children in our communities fall behind should be an unacceptable outcome in America. Furthermore, having had parents willing to sacrifice to provide enrollment in private institutions after 3rd grade, championing the removal of financial barriers for future generations is very exciting.
As a student of history, it is apparent that a 19th century model of educating children may indeed be insufficient for students in the 21st century. We ought to trust the creativity and innovation that market forces can bring to education, just as we rely on them in so many other facets of society. We should expect more from our academic institutions, while empowering families to find the educational solutions that best match their values and their needs.
