The Students First ESA is a state program that gives families money to help pay for private school tuition and other approved education costs at accredited K–12 nonpublic schools. For the 2025–26 school year, each eligible student will receive $7,826.
Any K–12 student who lives in Iowa, is at least 5 years old by September 15, 2025, and is enrolled in an accredited private school can apply—no income limits apply.
The application window is closed for 2025. Check back soon for 2026-2027 applications.
Visit the Iowa Department of Education’s website and apply through the Odyssey portal. The application is available in English and Spanish.
Funds will be available starting July 15 or 30 days after your application is approved—whichever comes later.
Each eligible student will receive $7,826 for the 2025–26 school year.
First, ESA accounts must pay for private school tuition and fees. If there’s money left, money may also go toward other approved items like books, learning materials, or tech—if purchased through the Odyssey system.
The Iowa Department of Education manages the program, and Odyssey handles applications and payments.
